UPDATES CONTINUE HERE ON TURKEY'S COUNTERCOUP 11:46 AM-
Breaking Now - It has been reported that there has been a military attempt to seize power. Gunshots were heard in Ankara, the Turkish capital, as low flying military jets and helicopters fly low and the bridges across the Bosphorus have been closed.
Yildirim, the current Prime Minister of Turkey, says "it would be wrong to call it a coup" but an attempt by "part of the military". He describes it as an "illegal attempt" to seize power and continues that Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy". He ensured that the perpetrators "will pay the highest price".
Note to the Ministry, you just described a coup.
“The power in the country has been seized in its entirety” – statement from the military read out on NTV television.
"We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt,” Mr. Yildirim told NTV by telephone. "There was an illegal act by a group within the military that was acting out of the chain of military command. Our people should know that we will not allow any activity that would harm democracy."
