Presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump might be learning his lesson and is going to keep his mouth shut on any future talk of Trump University and inflammatory and racist comments about the Judge who is presiding over the case. All I can say is it’s about damned time. But this is what I love about the Trump circus as is rolls along the national election trail: he never admits that he is wrong. In his last statement on the issue, he said that it was “It is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage.” I don’t really understand how his racist comments were misconstrued. He has spent a week banging his drum saying that U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel is biased against him because of his Mexican heritage. At first he called him a Mexican, which was completely wrong because he was born in Indiana. He didn’t just limit it to Curiel, Sunday in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” he agreed with the statement that a Muslim judge would treat him unfairly because of his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Basically the only person Trump believes has the ability to judge him fairly is probably another old white rich guy, but I might be misconstruing his comments. Although his final statement on Trump U tries to undo his comments, it falls well short of calming the political waters. He doesn’t even apologize for the role he played in in this debacle. Instead he doubles down that he is getting a raw deal, he just leaves the racism out of it. “Normally, legal issues in a civil case would be heard in a neutral environment. However, given my unique circumstances as nominee of the Republican Party and the core issues of my campaign that focus on illegal immigration, jobs and unfair trade, I have concerns as to my ability to receive a fair trial,” he said. Of course even if he apologized, the damage has already done and even Republicans are waking up to the fact that he has an unstable personality, which is spilling over into his campaign. This was a political crisis of his own making and continues to demonstrate that he isn’t fit to be president. Basically every time he opens his mouth and shoots himself in the foot. If he is like this at the national level what is he going to be like on an international stage? If he just kept his mouth shut and like a mature, reasonable human being waited for his day in court, he could have avoided this entire situation. Although he isn’t going to talk about Trump U any more, this won’t be the last of his stupid comments and all Republicans can do is pray that the damage won’t be too severe. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan is a perfect example. Last week he jumped on the tiger’s back and now call he can do is hold on for the ride.
The good news is that this past week it has been entertaining to see all the pundits and late-night talks shows eviscerate him for his “misconstrued” racist comments.
