This election campaign will probably go down in history for its unprecedented emotional intensity and now some really short-sighted people want to throw firearms into the mix. A petition is circulating Change.org that wants to allow attendees of the Republican National Convention to openly carry firearms in the Quicken Loans Arena. It does make me fear for humanity that more than 43,000 people have already signed the petition. I am going to be blunt, but this has got to be the stupidest idea of the entire campaign and that is saying a lot as there have been a lot of stupid ideas -- like Muslims shouldn’t be allowed to run for president or that the government should build a wall on the Mexican and Canadian borders -- tossed around during this primary race. Okay so Ohio allows people to openly carry firearms, but the problem, according to the gun lovers behind the petition, is that the area forbids firearms to be carried on the premises. In fact all weapons are strictly forbidden at the Quicken Loans Arena.
Yes, every U.S. citizen has, under the second amendment the right to bear arms, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to use a little bit of common sense and some discretion. After reading the petition, the question that I am now asking myself is why are Republicans are so fearful that they need they need to pack heat everywhere they go? Even if they are faced with a gun-toting criminal, do they really think they will spring into action and takedown the perp “Chuck Norris” style? In the unlikely event someone is faced with that situation, they will probably be more likely to shoot themselves or an innocent civilian, at least according to an ABC News Study. In general, it is a dumb idea to have a bunch of amateurs walk around with loaded guns but it’s just a stupid idea to have them at a convention, which is expected to be one big emotional drama. One candidate has predicted that if he is not elected the presidential nomination there will be riots during the convention -- he might not be wrong too as he has done nothing but contaminate the election process with his hate and rhetoric -- yeah Donald Trump I am talking to you. Trump, showing off his bravado, said that he would like to punch a protestor “in the face.” This statement is a reflection of the "angry" sentiment that has defined this primary campaign and that is exactly why we don’t need guns at the convention. When people are emotional and angry, they don’t have the best judgement or make the best decision. If you are really worried for your safety then pressure the party to hire more security at the event, bring in high resolution body scanners that everyone needs to walk through. Hire bomb-sniffing dogs to walk around the conference 24-hours a day. Hire plain clothed security to walk the floor. At least if there are going to be guns they them be in the hands of professionals. Finally, if you are really afraid for your safety, just stay in your bunker, eating canned beans. It is probably better to let the sane people make the political decisions anyways.
