Justin Trudeau: The New Face of Marvel Comics

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the new super hero in Marvel’s “Civil War II: Choosing Sides”. He joins the all-Canadian cast, plus Ironman, in the latest comic book. Due out in August, Trudeau is depicted sitting relaxed and smiling in a boxing ring while wearing boxing gloves and a maple leaf tank. Cartoonist Ramon Perez wanted to depict how different Trudeau is than all the leaders that we currently have in power. “You don’t see (U.S. President Barack) Obama strutting around in boxing gear, doing push-ups in commercials or whatnot. Just throwing him in his gear and making him almost like an everyday person was kind of fun,” said the award-winning cartoonist.

Artist and Writer Chip Zdarsky, was approached by Marvel to write a story and immediately knew he wanted Trudeau to be part of the Alpha Flight story, a group of Canadian peacekeepers. When asked why he wanted to include Trudeau, he said “I kind of figured to do a story about Canada right now and not take that opportunity to put Trudeau in seemed like a waste. He seems to be the popular culture association with Canada right now, right behind (Toronto rapper) Drake — and I probably couldn’t get Drake in the comic,” he added.

The Prime Minister’s Office approved Trudeau’s depiction in the comic, although they wouldn’t endorse the comic.

Issue No.5 of “Civil War II: Choosing Sides” is available for digital pre-order through Marvel’s Digital Store and can be pre-ordered through any local comic retailer.
