There is no doubt that Britain has been rattled in the wake of the murder of MP Jo Cox. 52-year old, Thomas Mair, has been charged with the stabbing and shooting of Jo Cox, a former aid worker and mother of two who was passionate about justice. When asked to confirm his name in court, he simply responded “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain.”
On the day of her murder, Brexit campaigning was put on hold, but now campaigning has resumed and, so far, has been civil. Previous to the murder, the two opposing sides have accused each other of lying and racism, but the Brexit debate has seen some solidarity and civility over the past few days. People are hopeful but many feel it won’t last.
Politicians are hoping to see “less divisive political debate and less inflammatory rhetoric” following the murder of Jo Cox. However, too much emphasis on the murder has caused for some to view the murder as a way of capitalizing on the ‘Remain’ campaign. Prime Minister David Cameron has been criticized for using the murder for political advantage after posting the following on Facebook:
‘It is not easy, in the wake of Jo’s murder, to turn to the question of Thursday’s referendum. But we must.’
