North Carolina Gov’t Doubles Down On Its Stupidity

Without a doubt, the U.S. political system is going down the toilet. Monday’s deadline for North Carolina came and went and now the state and the federal government are locked in lawsuits to determine who can use what bathroom and all I can do is shake my head. With all the crap that we are dealing with today: a shaky domestic economy, a volatile equity market, crumbling infrastructure, a mediocre educational system and global terrorism – why the hell do we need stupid legislation that determines who can use what bathroom. Instead of using common sense, we now have to let the courts decide where we flush. The U.S. Justice Department is suing North Carolina, threatening to pull its funding for the state’s department of public safety and the University of North Carolina. Surprise, surprise, the U.S. government says the legislation is discriminatory and violates the Civil Rights Act.  The state could lose out on hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding because of this law. And in a “You sue me, I’ll sue you,” move, Pat McCrory has doubled down on his stupidity with the state filing its own  lawsuit against the Federal Government, noting that the fed has a “radical reinterpretation” of the specific code in the act. While it is too early to determine how this will go, I should point out that last year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees same-sex marriage. I think eventually McCrory will prove to be on the wrong side of history.  What continues to surprise me about this story is that North Carolina continues to discriminate against the LGBT community, justifying their stance by saying they are following the will of the people – which is garbage. Before Monday’s deadline, a CNN/ORC poll found that almost six out of 10 Americans oppose the legislation that would determines who can use what toilet. Only 38% of the population support the legislation. The poll notes that 38% of the respondents strongly opposed the law, while only 25% were strongly supportive. It is nice to know that McCrory is supporting the discriminatory ideology of the minority. The poll found that it’s not even a Democrat or Republican specific issue. Among Republicans, there is a pretty even split around 48% are in favor and opposed. Hell, even expected Republican presidential Candidate Donald Trump has said that he doesn’t care who uses what bathroom. Finally, if this law is the will of the people, why have businesses come out against the legislation; Microsoft, IBM and Facebook have all voiced their disappointment. Even the State’s public university, the University of North Carolina has come said that it will defy the legislation and act “in compliance with federal law.” And as I have said before, the longer the government keeps this legislation on the books, the more everyone in the state is going to lose. The reality is that nobody gains by supporting discriminatory policies.
