Trump Supports Keystone Pipeline, But Wants A Sweeter Deal

After securing the Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump is turning his attention to the U.S. energy sector with his latest policy announcement, and he does so with his unique Trump-like flair. “We have so much potential energy,” GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump said during a press conference Thursday. “We will make so much money from energy that we will start to pay down our $19 trillion in debt and lower taxes and take care of our social security and medicare.”  Speaking ahead of his address at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in Brismack, North Dakota, Trump said he wants America to be energy independent, unlike his opponent Hillary Clinton. “She openly said she wants to put the coal miners out of business…energy independence is what we all want and sell our energy to other places.” He even commented on the heavily debated Keystone pipeline that has been a hot  political topic. Although the pipeline would create many jobs for both the U.S. and Canada, it may have adverse effects on the environment.  As the Washington Post put it, “NASA climate scientist James E. Hansen, who just retired from his federal job so he could become a full-time climate activist, said if all the oil was extracted from the oil sands it would be ‘game over’ when it came to the effort to stabilize the climate.”  However, the billionaire said he would approve the pipeline but make sure that the U.S. gets a better cut in the deal. “I would absolutely approve it 100% but I’m not saying it shouldn’t be a better deal,” he said.  “I want the Keystone pipeline but the people of the U.S. should be given a significant piece of the profits. That’s how we’re going to make our country rich again…and make America great again.” Another source of great debate in the energy community is fracking, which Trump said he doesn’t oppose. On the other hand, he continued, both Democratic opponents Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton do.  “They want to absolutely knock out fracking. You do that, you’ll be back in the Middle East and begging for oil again,” he warned.  During the Q&A portion of the press conference, Trump also shared some of his plans if he were to be elected president. “Under my plan, we’re lowering taxes substantially, we’re going to allow trillion of dollars to pour into the country and we’re going to get rid of the tremendous number of rules and regulations, which are terrible for our country,” he said. “Regulation is even more of a problem for people than taxes.” He said if he were elected, he would start by “unwinding executive orders,” and rebuild the country’s military. “We have to do it…we’re going to have the finest equipment in the world again and no one is going to mess with us, it’s that simple,” he said. “We’re going to have a lot of fun those first 100 days.” On the Democratic primary race, Trump said Clinton just “can’t close the deal” against Bernie Sanders, adding that it’s “such an easy deal to close.”
