Over the weekend, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump posted a tweet attacking rival Hillary Clinton, calling her the “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever.” What caused the controversy was not his message, but rather the image of a star that it was imprinted on.
Social media uproar ensued calling Trump ‘anti-Semitic’ and ‘racist’ claiming that the star on his tweet represented the Star of David – a highly-recognized Jewish symbol.
Trump deleted the original tweet and replaced the star with a circle, claiming it simply represented a Sherriff’s star, a simple six-sided star.
However, the firestorm on social media made Google searches on the term “Star of David” spike over the weekend and even became a nationwide trending topic on Twitter.
Trump responded on Monday morning, claiming that the media was once again out to get him:
Hillary Clinton’s campaign released the following statement on Monday:
“Donald Trump’s use of a blatantly anti-Semitic image from racist websites to promote his campaign would be disturbing enough, but the fact that it’s part of a pattern should give voters major cause for concern. Now, not only won’t he apologize for it, he’s peddling lies and blaming others. Trump should be condemning hate, not offering more campaign behavior and rhetoric that engages extremists. The President should be someone who brings Americans together, not someone who sends signals and offers policies of division.”
