Admirals could be rogue
- Fourteen navy ships are reportedly missing following the Turkey coup
- They have failed to return to their ports and could be headed to Greece
- Commander of the navy Admiral Veysel Kosele also remains missing
Speculation is that the ships may be on their way to Greek ports where the sailors will ask for asylum. The Turkish government refused to comment on the matter but told the newspaper: 'We assess that there are sleeper cells that might try to hijack helicopters or engage in other violent acts against peaceful demonstrators and government buildings.' Meanwhile eight other military personnel who flew a helicopter to Greece amid the coup have tried to claim asylum in the country.Today they will appear before immigration authorities for interviews on their applications.
More from the times:
Fourteen Turkish navy ships remained at sea and unaccounted for last night amid concerns that their commanders may be coup conspirators seeking to defect.Admiral Veysel Kosele, the commander of the Turkish navy, has been out of contact since Friday night’s botched coup, a source confirmed. It is not known whether he was an instigator of the attempt to oust President Erdogan or is being held hostage by collaborators on the run.Last night the president said that he was almost assassinated when the resort in southwest Turkey where he was staying was stormed and two of his bodyguards killed.
Two helicopters and 25 Special Forces troops are also missing since the failed coup, according to a report by the Hurriyet newspaper. It was reported that they were heading for a raid to target Erdogan in Marmaris, where he was enjoying a vacation.
“Two helicopters took off on the night linking July 17 to July 18. It could not be determined where the helicopters flying toward a forested area in Marmaris took off from. But its aim [to raid Erdogan] has been determined. The helicopters landed at an unknown location for a while and then went missing,” the Hurriyet stated on Monday.
