Who Tried to Assassinate Trump?

At a recent Trump rally in Las Vegas, a 20-year old British citizen by the name of Michael Steven Sandford, tried to assassinate Donald Trump. He had, apparently, driven to the event from Californa after planning to kill the presumptive GOP presidential nominee for a year. At the event, he allegedly tried to grab a police officer’s gun to “shoot and kill Trump”.

Here is what we know so far about the assassination attempt:

1) Sandford wanted Trump’s autograph first before trying to kill him

2) Sandford, who has Asperger’s, was treated for anorexia and obsessive compulsive disorder

3) Along with his Secret Service protection, Trump has a ‘mercenary’ security force to protect him. They wear regular street clothes to keep an eye out for protestors.

4) If found guilty, Sandford may face up to 10 years in prison.

Approximately 1,500 people were at the Las Vegas rally, all of which had to go through metal detectors overseen by the Secret Service and local authorities. Interestingly, Trump did not know about it until he heard it on TV. He commended the hard work and competence of the law enforcement in ensuring his safety during his campaign. “We have tremendous Secret Service and we have tremendous police throughout this country and they do a fantastic job. The policeman whose gun was tried to be, you know, stolen by this maniac was really fantastic," he said.

“These people are great, but they don’t get the credit they deserve. I deal with them all the time. I see them. I watch them. I know them. Terrific, terrific people."

Clearly, an assassination attempt is pretty big news. Someone who tries to kill a presidential nominee deserves more media coverage. Many are asking why this attempt to kill Trump did not receive more media attention.

Trump has shown that he does not seem interested in hyping the assassination attempt, and either does the media. As most would agree, if Trump really wanted to make this big news, he could. Both Trump and the media probably don't want to "give a poorly conceived assassination plot more attention than it's due", as reported by The Independent.

The question remains though, "if someone had attempted to shoot Hillary Clinton, what type of attention would that receive?"
