I want to be honest with you. I didn’t want to write anything related to the Orlando shooting this past weekend because I believe it is a time for mourning and contemplation not for rhetoric and definitely not for self-congratulations. Before I go on I just want to tell people in Orland and the families that are suffering my thoughts and prayers are with them. However, I get so angry when I read some of the vitriol comments regarding immigrants and Muslims, in particular so this is my way to vent. Once again people are talking about banning Muslims from entering the U.S. with the thinking that it will solve all our problems. Apparently, if we didn’t have Muslims or Mexican’s in the country we would have no problems; it would be lollypops and rainbows year-round. I hate that I have to point this out: MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS AND MEXICANS ARE NOT DRUG DEALEARS AND RAPISTS. I would think something like this is common knowledge but apparently it isn't. While banning Muslims from entering the U.S. might sound like a good idea to the racists and rednecks, it will be impossible to enforce. My passport does not have my religion on it and being a white person, I highly doubt that I would be asked if I was Muslim. You can’t necessarily tell a person’s religion from their appearance. At the same time, if you ban people from specific countries what about all the non-Muslims who would be banned? Finally how does the ban stop domestic terrorists? The latest gunman was an American citizen who obviously had mental health issues. The ban would not have stopped him from killing 50 of his fellow citizens. If you really wanted to stop terrorists from entering the country then the best solution to would be provide more resources to the State Department and other agencies to filter out potential specific threats The problem rightwing politicians refuse to address is access to assault weapons. What would have stopped the latest attack is if the person didn’t have readily access to an automatic weapon. The longer politicians live in denial the more people will be killed. The idea that this person could have been stopped if a “good guy with a gun” was around is also absolutely false. There were armed guards at the club and the assailant exchanged fire with an off duty policy offer at the club and still managed to perpetrate the worst mass-shooting in American history. An immediate solution to mass shooting is to take away the tool that is used in them. You can’t build a house without a hammer, you can’t drive a car without fuel and you can’t shoot people without a gun. Finally for the racists… sorry rightwing conservatives… who think America would be better off without immigrants the joke is on you.
