Trump officially announced this morning that his VP pick for his Presidential campaign is Indiana Governor Mike Pence. The ‘breaking’ news leaked on Thursday not allowing for a bigger impact, as Trump probably would have wanted.
Who is Mike Pence and why did Trump choose him as his running mate?He has what Trump lacks: experience. Governor Mike Pence has political experience, spending 12 years in congress giving him the legislative support that Trump needs. Of the other VP candidates that were on Trump’s VP shortlist, he is the least likely to cause harm in his campaign.
He will make the conservative base of the Republican Party happy. He is outspoken about anti-abortion laws and signed a religious freedom bill.
Mike Pence has connections with the Koch brothers. This presents an opportunity for Trump to form significant ties with other influential donors who have typically avoided the Trump campaign.
For the most part, Pence has a positive social image. Not many people know much of him as he has kept a low profile and clean image. This is seen as a way to help boost Trump’s image as a brash and arrogant candidate.
Pence is a “yes" man, exactly what Trump is looking for. Trump needs someone who will not question authority, something that both Christie and Gingrich might have had trouble with.
Other things to point out….
- Pence and Trump don’t see eye-to-eye on some key issues.
- Muslim Ban: Last year, Mr Pence tweeted that Mr Trump's plan was "offensive and unconstitutional".
- War on Iraq: Pence was in favor of the war, Trump was not.
- Free trade agreements: Pence expressed support for free trade.
- Pence criticized Trump for attacking Hispanic judge Gonzalo Curiel for not being able to rule fairly in a case against him because of his Hispanic heritage.
What did Hillary Clinton have to say?
Other public opinions?
For someone who branded himself as unpredictable and risky, it's ironic how his choice for VP seemed to be the opposite - safe and totally predictable.
