Mexico has said peace out to the country's biggest terrorist - the infamous Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, head of the world's most powerful drug-trafficking organization: the Sinaloa cartel.
It seemed only appropriate I cover the news, not only for the 'appropriate' alias, but also because it was something I was anticipating for quite some time (I must have learned a few things from my "Narcos" Netflix binge after all!)
Aside from drug trafficking, countless murders and multiple prison breaks, El Chapo is finally in custody and now faces what every drug lord tries to avoid: EXTRADITION TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
The Mexican government basically told their northern neighbors today that they no longer want the billionaire narcotraficante and instead said he's all yours!
However, according to media reports, the process is up for appeal, which means he might only be sent north in weeks or EVEN months. "Guzman’s lawyers now have 30 days to appeal the decision. The department said Friday that the United States has guaranteed that Guzman would not face the death penalty, which is not applied in Mexico," as reported by USA Today.
Here's his story (thank you Biography.com):
El Chapo founded the Sinaloa cartel in 1989 and built it into the most "profitable global drug-trafficking operation."
"In 2009, Sinaloa was reportedly pulling in $3 billion annually, putting Guzmán’s net worth at around $1 billion. That earned him the No. 701 ranking on the Forbes list of the world's richest people," they wrote.
How did he become so successful?
"Part of the success stemmed from Sinaloa’s creative smuggling methods, most notably a series of air-conditioned tunnels that ran under the Mexican-U.S. border," they wrote...(so much for Trump's wall idea stopping drugdealers). "Another method involved hiding cocaine powder inside fire extinguishers and cans that were labeled 'chili peppers.'"
Guzman also managed to build his empire by creating multiple gangs, which Biography.com claims have been accused of commmitting more than 1,000 murders in Mexico.
In 2014, Guzman was again arrested by Mexican authorities but, once again, escaped less than 18 months later.
He would only be caught again in January of this year. But, apparently, during those 6 months when he was "free," he had a secret interview with actor Sean Penn. "Guzmán wanted to make a movie about his life, and managed to connect to Penn via Mexican actress Kate del Castillo," Biography.com wrote.
