Gingrich Eying VP Nom? Defends Trump on Star Controversy

Whether he’s just sucking up to Trump to get the VEEP nomination or whether he really thinks the media blew this latest Trump “scandal” out of proportion, one former House Speaker is basically saying Let It Go to the media over the Star of David controversy.

Quick recap:

  1. Donald Trump posted an ad on Twitter against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, which happened to have a star on it. The star, which some claimed was in the shape of the Star of David and which had “most corrupt candidate ever" written on it, was interpreted as having anti-Semitic undertones.
  2. Trump’s campaign quickly removed the tweet, claimed it was a simply six-sided star, and then the candidate went on a #DishonestMedia rant.
  3. On Thursday, the presumptive GOP nominee tweeted a photo of a “Frozen” sticker book (think Disney), which also held a similarly shaped star. "Where is the outrage?" he questioned on social media.

Fast forward to today and cue Newt Gingrich, former house speaker and potentially Trump’s VP running mate...He went on CNN Thursday to defend the Donald.

“Newt Gingrich on Thursday defended Donald Trump's controversial tweet…telling CNN there was nothing anti-Semitic about the image and that the recent uproar was an ‘absurd’ and ‘demagogic’ attack orchestrated by the media,” CNN reported.

"I think it is so profoundly dishonest that it sickens me and makes me very angry," Gingrich told CNN. "The media's deliberate distortion. It's absurdity. He has got a son-in-law who's an Orthodox Jew, his daughter has converted to Judaism, grandchildren who are Jewish. And he gave a speech at AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) that was pretty definitive. And in the middle of this, you get this kind of smear?"

Was it just a smear campaign? What do you think? SPEAK UP!

Or, just sing along to the song with me...
