In a commencement speech in front of 3,000 undergraduates and graduates at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Damon said Wall Street is made of a bunch of people that “steal people’s money.”
Speaking to the group on Friday, Oscar-winner Damon also alluded to an endorsement of Massachusetts' Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren and took aim at presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump. Damon hails from the state.
Damon criticized politicians who are "incentivized to think short term, and simply do not engage with long-term problems." The actor faulted bankers for the 2008 financial collapse. A vocal democratic, Damon is a supporter of Hillary Clinton who has been criticized for her ties to Wall Street.
Damon called the 2008 crisis, "the biggest heist in history.” "It was theft, and you knew it. It was fraud and you knew it, And you know what else? We know that you knew it," Damon said. "I don't know if justice is coming for you in this life or the next but if it does come in this life? Her name will be Elizabeth Warren," he added.
He also commented on the upcoming Brexit vote. “He called Brexit an "insane idea," and described it as the U.K. trying to "cut loose from Europe and drift out to sea."
Apparently the crowd was not very receptive to Damon – with lukewarm applause during his comments.
In 2012, Damon and fellow actor Ben Affleck raised money for Warren's Senate campaign.
